Solar lighting mainly works through conversion of energy coming from the sun to stored electricity. This stored electricity may be used to supply power needed in light fixtures. Photovoltaic cells or solar panels, nickel-metal hydride commonly known as NiMH battery, light sensor and LED lamp make up a solar light. The solar panel collects the solar energy and converts it, the rechargeable battery stores the electricity, and the sensor serves as a timer that turns the light on automatically when nighttime comes in.

Depending on the size of the solar panel and the rechargeable battery, a solar powered outdoor light can give 10 hours of illumination provided that the battery is fully charged.

It is also important to note that solar outdoor lights may not be as bright as conventional lights. The light source which is in LED type gives a different kind of illumination. But you can get a brighter lighting if you choose a solar lighting fixture with more than one LED. Normally, one led is sufficient enough to light up patios or gardens; single LED solar powered outdoor light is recommended for accent lighting. Path lighting may be different as brighter illumination is needed to ensure better security and safety. The recommended LED number is around three LEDs for every lighting fixture.

You need not worry about the lifespan of LED lamps as they last for over 25 years. They usually last as long as the lifetime of the whole fixture. However, the LED lamps themselves are not replaceable. The rechargeable batteries of solar lightings charge and discharge completely. They can last up to 1000 nights and can be replaced anytime.

And lastly, because they make use of solar energy, solar powered outdoor lighting is the most helpful on the budget and the most responsive to the environment.
