The team over at LuminAID, known for their PackLite Max 2-in-1 Phone Charger, has just created geometric lanterns that let you customize light with your phone to transform any space. This new project is called the Smart Solar Garden, and the lanterns can even sync light settings with event schedules and are controlled with your smartphone. It just launched on Kickstarter this week (and was fully funded in 8 hours!)

Official Press Release

Chicago, IL. November 6, 2017

Chicago-based startup LuminAID is introducing a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for a new line of app-powered solar lanterns, called the Smart Solar Garden. The lanterns come in two geometric shapes, and are a step into the Home and Garden market for the startup known for its success on ABCs Shark Tank with its inflatable solar lanterns. The crowdfunding campaign goes live November 7th.

The LuminAID Smart Solar Garden introduces bluetooth-enabled solar lanterns that allow users to schedule light settings, adjust colors, and control groups of lights at once. Users can easily design the lighting and mood of any space all with the Smart Solar Garden app. The lanterns can be controlled individually or in groups. The app-integration includes intelligent light modes that allow users to set light schedules each day of the week for when lights power on, off, or change color. The color and brightness is also remotely controlled with the smartphone app. The Smart Solar Garden line includes two lantern shapes: the Star and the Gem. The Star is a three-dimensional five-point star, and has a range of warm to cool white LED light. The Gem is a geometric pyramid, and has a range of 100s of customizable LED colors. The lanterns are roughly 1 foot in height and collapse flat for easy storage.

The campaign goal on Kickstarter is $20,000 and will be live until December 10th. LuminAID’s previous campaign for the PackLite Max 2-in-1 Phone Charger, a compact solar device with phone charging and a lantern, was fully funded in 8 hours. Co-founder Andrea Sreshta explained how the new campaign is a natural progression from the original inflatable solar lanterns LuminAID is known for in camping, emergency prep, and humanitarian relief.

“We’ve always believed that light has a simple but powerful effect on our daily lives. LuminAID has always been about creating innovations that go beyond the limitations of traditional light sources…whether electrical or fuel-based. The Smart Solar Garden is another way to use sustainable technology to respond to these basic limitations and create light that brings people together.”

The new campaign will also contribute to LuminAID’s humanitarian relief efforts, which have been an integral part of the company mission since it was founded in 2010. For each Kickstarter pledge, LuminAID will sponsor one of their original inflatable solar lantern for a family without power. The startup will be building on their Hurricane Relief campaign which this season raised over 30,000 LuminAID safe solar lanterns for families left without electricity following Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Solar lanterns raised through the Smart Solar Garden Kickstarter will go to those still without power in Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean.

About LuminAID

When we think of our most basic human needs, we often think of food, water and shelter. But when architecture graduate students Anna Stork and Andrea Sreshta were asked to design a product to assist post-earthquake relief efforts in Haiti, they considered the dangerous conditions at night in the tent cities and turned their attention to another critical need: light. They designed the LuminAID light to be easily distributed in time of need by packing and shipping flat.

In 2015, Anna and Andrea went on the hit TV show Shark Tank, and wowed the “Sharks” so much that they got offers from every Shark! They accepted an offer from Mark Cuban, and he is the company’s first investor. When asked why Cuban chose LuminAID as one of his Shark Tank investments, he remarked,” I look for smart people, a product that is unique in some way and something that fills a particular need for society. LuminAID is an example of an innovation that solves a problem for society.”
