Carmel, Indiana has decided that green is the only way to be when it comes to lighting up their city streets. With a desire to save energy and be more green, in turn saving the town a considerable amount of money, the town enlisted Beacon Products to help them with their plans. After doing extensive economic research Beacon Products found retrofitting the city’s current downtown lighting to be more cost effective than installing all new fixtures.

After their economic study, which included a trial run with their LED retrofit kits, Beacon products estimated that their product would save the city 48% in energy costs. Greenhouse emissions would be significantly reduced as well. The city would also decrease their maintenance costs while insuring the fastest payback schedule. Since the LEDs last 50,000 hours it is easy to see exactly how greatly maintenance costs would be significantly decreased.

With their findings complete Beacon Products installed their LED Retrofit Kits with Direct V Optics into all 800 of the decorative post top light posts in Carmel’s downtown. The retrofit kits are 90 watts each and have replaced the city’s previous metal halide and high pressure sodium (HPS) lighting sources.

The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG), which is a program of the Department of Energy, made the lighting project possible to implement. The retrofitted lighting has an expected savings of over 600,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year. That is equal to taking about 100 vehicles off of the road, or recycling 144 tons of waste rather than dumping it in a land fill.

The retrofitted lighting provides better illumination for the businesses and citizens of Carmel, Indiana. All while being better for the environment and helping Carmel’s economic bottom line. If more cities follow in Carmel’s footsteps the earth will become just a little bit greener. I’m sure the citizen’s of Carmel would agree that green is good.
